Ingredient Spotlight - Shea Butter

In this week's ingredient spotlight, we're talking about shea butter, one of the key ingredients in Blush + Bounce's formula.

You might already have shea butter as part of your skin/body care routine, whether it's applying some to your chapped lips or onto your arms to prevent sunburn irritation. But it can have so many benefits to your hair and, just as importantly, your scalp. And there's a relationship between the two!

Shea butter can help soothe your skin with fatty acids that create a moisture barrier. One thing that is essential for many people is preventing dandruff, especially if you have a naturally dry scalp. Those dandruff flakes can get in your curls and waves, especially tighter ones, causing someone to have to brush them out. As mentioned in the last Reclaiming Frizz blog, overly brushing dry curls can cause damage to your ends, so keeping your scalp clean and dandruff-free is a great way to avoid that. Plus, you won't be itching your hair and messing up all the work you've done for your look!

Shea butter is also fantastic for holding your curls' structure together. It acts as a great soft holder for style, meaning you don't have to overdo any products that might have side effects on your hair - it adds especially strong structure when paired with B + B's aloe leaf juice. It also clumps curls together to minimize annoying single-strand knots for your wash days.

Because B + B relies on shea butter, it can have a thicker, pastier texture when first applied to your own hands. So it's important that you rub it and course it firmly through your hands before applying it in the shower. If you're worried your curled hair might be too thick and start to collapse if fully clumped, try to deep condition it to make them just a little softer and hold its collective shape.
