Five Common Curly Hair Mistakes

Five Common Curly Hair Mistakes

When taking care of your curls, you wanna make sure you're doing it the right way. That means doing the right stuff, especially when it comes to your unique style of curl. But that can also mean taking the wrong things out of your routine.

Here are five common mistakes you could be making with your curly hair:

1. Overwashing - Any hair with curls tends to be drier than wavy or pin-straight hair, and a lot of that is caused by locked-in natural oils. If you wash your hair too much, those oils can be pushed out and cause dryness and frizziness. You should ideally wash your curly hair 1-3 times a week, not any more.

2. No deep conditioning - Deep conditioning is also a key part of making sure that your curls don't experience any dryness or frizz. Conditioning provides key hydration to any hair, but it's especially important for curly hair because its natural shape can make it harder for natural oils to reach the ends. You have to make sure ALL your hair is getting the health it needs.

3. Brushing dry curls - While it may be tempting for certain styles, you should try to avoid brushing out dry curls. It can lead to breakage that can disrupt the natural pattern of your hair, making it even harder for natural oils to be absorbed appropriately. Instead, try using a wide brush or your hands to detangle your hair when it's lightly wet or even damp.

4. Rough towel drying - Using a towel, especially one that isn't made from microfiber, too roughly, can lead to breakage and split ends in your hair. Connecting to the previous point, this can cause your hair to be messy when it fully dries, causing the need to brush and disrupt the natural shape even more.

5. Overheating - Overheating isn't good for any hair shape, but curly hair is presented with unique challenges. Not only might heat damage make the shape of the curls less defined and harder to style, but because curly hair has weaker cross-sections, breakage can be even more damaging than with straight or wavy hair. Using your blow-drier less or on a lower setting could be a helpful way to maintain natural shape.
